What is the Meaning of Life?

Explains the meaning of life briefly through religion, philosophy and Islam, describing human purpose and spiritual value.

What is the Meaning of Life image What is the meaning of life is one of the oldest and deepest philosophical questions in human history. Since existence began, humans have wondered why they live, what their purpose is, and what happens after death. This is not merely curiosity but also an effort to understand oneself and one’s place in the universe. From a philosophical point of view, the meaning of life is a subjective experience that varies from person to person. For some philosophers, meaning lies in the pursuit of happiness; for others, in knowledge, virtue, or freedom. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle defined the ultimate goal of human life as “living well.” This good life is possible through reason, moderation, and virtue. Stoic philosophers, on the other hand, found meaning not in external conditions but in inner peace. According to them, a person discovers life’s purpose when they live in harmony with the order of the universe.

What Is the Meaning of Life in Philosophy

In modern philosophy, the question of life’s meaning has been reexamined, especially by existentialist thinkers. Philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus argued that the universe has no inherent meaning, and it is up to humans to give meaning to their own lives. In his work “The Myth of Sisyphus,” Camus states that even though life may seem meaningless, a person can create meaning through their struggle. Meaning is not given from outside; we construct it through our choices and actions. In philosophy, the task of the human being is not merely to survive but to live consciously and give purpose to existence.

What Is the Meaning of Life in Religion – Islam

In Islam, the meaning of life is tied to the existence of God, the purpose of creation, and the belief in the hereafter. According to the Qur’an, humans were sent to this world as a test: “I created the jinn and mankind only that they might worship Me.” (Adh-Dhariyat, 56). Thus, in Islam, the purpose of life is to earn the pleasure of Allah, live justly, do good, and act in accordance with the divine purpose of creation. This world is temporary; the real life is in the hereafter. Therefore, life’s true meaning lies in recognizing the eternal and living accordingly. In Sufism, life is seen as a journey of knowing and approaching God. The purpose of human existence is to know oneself and, through that, to know the Creator.

What Is the Meaning of Life – In Short

In short, both philosophy and religion see life’s meaning in the human effort to transcend the self. Philosophy emphasizes reason, freedom, and individual choice, while Islam unites this meaning with faith in God. Both perspectives converge on one truth: life is not merely existence; it is seeking meaning, creating, and turning toward goodness. A person attains true peace when they find this meaning within. In truth, the meaning of life is to know God, believe in Him, and live in accordance with His will. Life is the greatest mirror reflecting the divine names and attributes. Humans were not sent to this world for their own sake but to recognize their Creator and serve Him. True meaning is not found in the temporary pleasures of this world but in faith and worship that lead to eternal happiness. Thus, the purpose of life is to know God, turn toward Him, and keep this awareness alive in every moment. /
