Why Are Prayer Beads Recited 33 Times?

Reciting dhikr 33 times is a Sunnah of the Prophet and a spiritual way to find peace by remembering Allah.

Why Are Prayer Beads Recited 33 Times image Dhikr, or the remembrance of Allah, is an act of worship in Islam that purifies the heart and brings peace to the soul. After prayer, Muslims often repeat certain phrases known as tasbihat a specific number of times. So, why is dhikr recited thirty-three times? This practice is a Sunnah established in the authentic hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet advised saying “Subhanallah,” “Alhamdulillah,” and “Allahu Akbar” each thirty-three times after every prayer. These praises mean glorifying Allah, thanking Him, and acknowledging His greatness. The numbers are not arbitrary but rooted in spiritual wisdom, setting a balanced rhythm that trains the heart and keeps the tongue in constant remembrance of Allah.

The place of the thirty-three dhikr in hadith

Many authentic hadiths refer to this practice. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “After each prayer, say thirty-three times ‘Subhanallah,’ thirty-three times ‘Alhamdulillah,’ and thirty-three times ‘Allahu Akbar.’ When you reach a hundred, complete it by saying ‘La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay’in qadir.’” (Muslim, Masajid 146) This hadith shows that repeating dhikr thirty-three times became a well-established devotional tradition. The Prophet also taught this to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), emphasizing it as both an act of gratitude and patience. The sum of these three dhikrs makes one hundred 33 + 33 + 33 = 99 symbolically representing Allah’s ninety-nine beautiful names, the Asmaul Husna. Thus, the prayer beads and the recitation form a harmony between numerical completeness and spiritual depth.

The spiritual meaning of dhikr and the number

Reciting dhikr is not just a movement of the tongue; it strengthens the bond between the heart and Allah. In the Qur’an, Allah says, “Remember Me, and I will remember you.” (Al-Baqarah, 152) Another verse states, “Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.” (Ar-Ra’d, 28) The regular repetition of thirty-three times brings both mental focus and inner tranquility. Dhikr helps a person remain mindful of their Creator amid life’s distractions. The number 33 also provides a rhythmic and balanced structure, allowing the mind to internalize devotion and enhance spiritual awareness. Through this act, a believer completes their prayer both outwardly and inwardly, attaining purification of the soul. In this sense, reciting dhikr thirty-three times is not merely a numeric repetition but a profound expression of spiritual discipline and connection with Allah. /
