Why Are They Called Fairy Chimneys?
Why are they called Fairy Chimneys and how were they formed? After volcanic activity, wind and rain shaped them over thousands of years into their current form.
How were the Fairy Chimneys formed
The Fairy Chimneys were formed as a result of volcanic activity millions of years ago. Lava and tuff layers emitted from extinct volcanoes such as Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan, and Mount Güllü gradually took shape under the effects of wind, rain, and erosion. During this process, the soft volcanic rock called tuff eroded, while the harder basalt layer on top remained as a protective “cap.” As a result, cone-shaped pillars and rock caps that appear to be sculpted by human hands were formed. This natural erosion process took millions of years, creating the stunning landscape that has become the symbol of Cappadocia today. Why are they called Fairy Chimneys
The Fairy Chimneys are not only geological wonders but also cultural heritage. People living in the region decorated these formations with legends and believed that fairies inhabited them.1- This belief evolved into folk tales where fairies were thought to appear and dance at night.
2- Some legends claim that the chimneys contain secret passages and underground tunnels.
3- Thus, nature and imagination became intertwined.
Today, the name “Fairy Chimneys” represents both natural beauty and mystical heritage. These formations are called “chimneys” because of their shape, but their true meaning lies in the fusion of nature and mythology. Apart from the Cappadocia region, the town of Narman in Erzurum province also features impressive fairy chimney formations. The late Turkish singer İbrahim Erkal even filmed music videos in these areas for his old songs. /
