Why Do Airplanes Leave White Trails?

The white lines behind airplanes are known as condensation trails or contrails. When jet engines burn fuel, they release carbon dioxide and large amounts of water vapor. At cruising altitude, the air is extremely cold, causing this vapor to freeze quickly into tiny ice crystals. These crystals form the white streaks we see in the sky. Whether the trail is long or short depends on the weather conditions. In humid air, the contrails last longer and appear thicker, while in dry air they disappear quickly. Sometimes two planes flying at the same time can leave trails of different lengths, which is due to the temperature and humidity differences at their respective altitudes. While contrails are mostly harmless, in climate science they are studied for their potential effects on cloud formation and sunlight reflection.
