Why do some people reject hadiths?

The rejection of hadiths stems from a variety of perspectives and reasons. First and foremost, some people believe that hadiths are not as authentic or as well-preserved as the Qur’an. According to this view, while the Qur’an is divinely protected, hadiths were transmitted through human memory and oral tradition, which may have allowed additions, omissions, or distortions over time. As a result, the reliability of hadiths is often questioned. Another factor is that certain hadiths, when taken out of their historical context, appear to conflict with modern values, which leads critics to dismiss them. Additionally, throughout Islamic history, different sects and schools of thought have sometimes used selective hadiths—or even weak narrations—to support their own interpretations, fueling skepticism toward the entire body of hadith literature. In modern times, rationalist and reformist approaches emphasize the Qur’an alone, viewing it as the sufficient foundation of Islam, while relegating hadiths to a secondary position. However, not everyone who rejects hadiths does so completely; some deny all hadiths, while others only dismiss those they consider weak or fabricated. In short, hadith rejection arises from concerns about authenticity, loss of historical context, sectarian influences, and the impact of modern intellectual movements.
