Why does a computer make noise?

It is completely normal for computers to make noise, and this occurs for several reasons. The most common source of noise is the cooling fans. Components such as the processor, graphics card, and power supply generate heat during operation; fans spin to regulate this heat. When the workload is high—for example, while gaming or running heavy software—fan speeds increase, resulting in louder sounds. Traditional hard drives (HDDs) also produce audible sounds; clicking or spinning noises can be heard when data is read or written. Modern SSDs, however, are silent. Optical drives (CD/DVD) can create a noticeable spinning noise while in use. Loose screws or misaligned case parts may cause vibrations that lead to additional noise. In more serious cases, worn-out fan bearings, accumulated dust, or hardware malfunctions can generate unusual sounds. Electrical issues may even cause buzzing or crackling noises. If the sound is unusually loud, persistent, or different from the normal operating noise, it may indicate a problem.
