Why Should Muslims Avoid Celebrating New Year?
Celebrating a holiday observed by Christians with excitement in our country seems to be evidence of being placed in the same category as Christians.
Why Should We Avoid Celebrating New Year?
The primary reason New Year celebrations are considered problematic for Muslims is the issue of cultural and religious imitation. Moreover, what we imitate today is a festival belonging to those who openly desire to weaken Islam and, at times, seek to eliminate Muslims entirely. Islamic scholars do not consider it appropriate to participate in celebrations that resemble the symbols or rituals of other faiths. Although New Year’s historical roots lie within other belief systems, and even if it has gained a secular form over time, it is still regarded as a practice from which Muslims should remain distant in order to preserve their religious identity. In addition, New Year celebrations are often associated with alcohol consumption, excessive entertainment, wastefulness, loss of time, and behaviors considered religiously inappropriate, making it necessary to evaluate the matter from a broader perspective. The views of scholars generally fall under several key points1- New Year originates from traditions belonging to other faiths,
2- Some practices within these celebrations are considered sinful,
3- A Muslim has the responsibility to protect their religious identity,
4- New Year’s Eve often turns into wastefulness and idle time consumption. When these points are combined, it becomes clear that New Year holds no religious value for Muslims, and thus labeling its celebration as sinful becomes valid under certain conditions. It is also emphasized that noticing a calendar year change and turning that moment into a celebration are fundamentally different things. From the perspective of Islamic sensitivity, avoiding active participation in such celebrations is viewed as a healthier and more appropriate approach.
