Why Were There No Female Prophets?

There were no female prophets because Allah chose men for prophethood. This is divine wisdom and does not diminish the value of women.

Why Were There No Female Prophets image According to our religion, prophethood is a divine duty determined by Allah’s choice. In the light of the Quran and Sunnah, no woman was ever sent as a prophet, and this is based on divine wisdom. In the Quran, all those mentioned as prophets are men, and this is clearly stated in Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 7: “We sent before you only men as messengers.” This verse shows that prophethood is not about gender but about duty and responsibility. Allah granted this mission to men according to the structure of societies, the weight of responsibilities, and the conditions of the time. This does not diminish the value of women; on the contrary, Islam gives women their own sphere of honor and responsibility.

The Spiritual Status of Women in the Quran

The Quran regards men and women as equal in terms of faith, piety, and good deeds. In Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 35, the phrase “Believing men and believing women...” emphasizes that the rank of both genders before Allah depends on their deeds. However, prophethood is a special duty given only to certain individuals. Women were not prophets, yet many of them supported revelation and became exemplary figures in their societies. Maryam (Mary), Asiya, and Hagar are honored in the Quran for their faith, patience, and devotion, showing that one can be spiritually great without the title of a prophet. Allah inspired some women, but He did not appoint them as prophets.

Why No Female Prophet Was Sent

There are no hadiths indicating the existence of a female prophet. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) exalted the status of women in religion, family, and society through his own example. Women are not prophets, but they are the pillars of the Islamic community. Their absence in prophethood is based on divine wisdom, as the role involves heavy responsibilities such as preaching, leadership, conflict, and guiding entire nations. Allah’s choice is just and perfectly suited to each servant. Therefore, the fact that no woman was sent as a prophet is not a deficiency but a manifestation of divine wisdom. Moreover, apart from Prophet Adam, all prophets were brought into the world and carried by women — the mothers themselves. /
