Why Does the Word We Appear in Qur’anic Verses?

In the Quran, God sometimes refers to Himself with the word “We” instead of “I,” which might seem plural at first glance. Islamic scholars explain that this does not contradict the principle of divine oneness. In classical Arabic, “We” can function as a plural of majesty, a linguistic form used to express greatness and authority. Similar usages exist in many languages; for example, a monarch might say, “We have decided,” to emphasize sovereignty. In some verses, the term also reflects the role of angels who convey revelation or carry out commands by God’s will, yet all power and decision remain solely with Him. The Qur’anic use of “We” therefore highlights God’s supreme majesty and His comprehensive control over creation, not multiple deities.
