Why Can’t Men Wear Gold in Islam?
Wearing gold is prohibited for men because it contradicts the Sunnah of the Prophet and undermines the modest posture expected from men. The use of jewelry for men is limited, and apart from specific allowances such as silver rings, gold is considered forbidden for men. The main rationale behind this prohibition is to encourage men to live a simple and humble life, free from ostentation. Spiritually, wearing gold can trigger feelings of vanity and ego, which can harm religious values. From a biological perspective, items such as gold and silk, which are forbidden for men, have been shown long ago by scholars to negatively affect male hormones. In some men, they have also been observed to cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, and possible health issues due to prolonged contact. Research shows that metal exposure can increase inflammation and immune responses in the skin. For these reasons, the prohibition of men wearing gold is not only a religious rule but also a recommended practice in terms of health.1- Wearing gold for men is prohibited by prophetic hadiths.
