Why was the Quran revealed in Arabic?

The Quran was revealed in Arabic primarily because its first audience was the Arab people. God states in the Quran: “We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people, so that he might make [the message] clear to them.” (Ibrahim 14:4). Thus, revelation in Arabic ensured clarity and understanding for the Prophet’s community. Another reason is the unique richness of the Arabic language. The Quran is regarded as the peak of eloquence and linguistic mastery, and Arabic was the most suitable medium to manifest this miraculous aspect. The Quran itself says: “Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand.” (Yusuf 12:2), and also “A Qur’an in Arabic, for a people who know.” (Fussilat 41:3). In the hadiths, it is mentioned that the Prophet spoke Arabic and the revelation came in his native tongue, further emphasizing accessibility for the first receivers. However, the Quran being in Arabic does not mean its message is exclusive to Arabs. Its guidance is universal, reaching all nations through translations, while Arabic remains the preserved original language of revelation until the end of time.
